Zivio Boom: A Retro-Style Bluetooth Headset

Thank goodness someone decided to do something a bit different in the area of bluetooth headset design.  I’m tired of all those ugly little nubs sticking out of people’s ears. That’s why I’m thankful for the Zinio Boom Bluetooth 2.1+EDR headset.

The idea is that the telescoping microphone can extend to where your mouth is and provide better sound pickup.  It looks a bit on the delicate side, but make no mistake, this bluetooth headset will give you 10 hours of talk time with 300 hours of standby, which is nothing to dismiss.  (more…)

The Cowon P5: A Haptic Touchscreen Media Player

Cowon has unleashed the P5 in the not-so-crowded market of touchscreen personal media players (PMP). It is targeted more at video users, offering a 5 inch 800×480 pixel touchscreen display with haptic feedback. The design is pretty nice and quite similar to the Archos line of PMPs and several UMPCs.

To speed things up in the interface and playback department, the P5 uses a fast 700Mhz processor to decode full DVD-resolution videos, both offline and online through the built-in DMB tuner (for now, it’s limited in Korea). (more…)

So listen up, gear up, and head out as we showcase the 25 Hottest Rugged Gadgets that can Weather The Outdoors (in no particular order).

  • Segway X2 Adventure
Leave the pack in the dust as you glide on the back of this gyroscopic beast. The Segway X2 Adventure is basically a ruggedized Segway built with exploration in mind. Chunky wheels and an advanced gyroscope keep you stable and a cargo pouch holds all your necessities. It  has a 5W headlamp to light your way. You’ll be able to go up to 12 miles on a charge in about an hour at top speed.
  • Casio G’zOne Type-R Outdoor PhoneIf you’re planning on going anywhere remote this summer, you want to make sure you have a life-line back to civilization should any emergencies occur.  The G’zOne Type-R Outdoor Phone by Casio fits the bill perfectly.  The phone is water-proof and shock-resistant, comes with a built-in electronic compass and is available in 3 colors.  But you might have to send away for this one – it’s currently only available in Japan; but you were planning on traveling anyway, weren’t you?  (The G’zOne type-S is currently available from Verizon, albeit with some watered down features, or you could just wait for the G’zOne Boulder which is rumored to be coming out some time in the near future.)
  • Magellan Triton
I know what you’re thinking – Outdoor GPS’s just route from point to point, regardless of whether there might be a river, gorge, forest, or black bear in the way.  Well my friends, let me introduce you to the Magellan Triton, which features Primordial’s Ground Guidance logic.  What this means is that, by analyzing satellite photos of the earth, this GPS will route you around rivers, cliffs, thick forests, and other obstacles, so that it gets you from point A to point B in the safest and easiest way possible.  This touchscreen device also comes with a 2 megapixel camera, water-resistant cover, barometer, built-in LED flashlight, and National Geographic’s maps. Certainly not the only tool you’d want to have out in the wild, but a great way to give you an edge!
  • Nalgene Bottle Kits
If there is one thing you don’t want to be stuck without while outdoors, it’s water.  Dehydration is downright dangerous, and fortunately, largely preventable.  Nalgene bottles have been around for years, but Nalgene Bottle kits offer a useful twist on an old classic.  Coming in 6 different varieties, these Nalgene bottles are stuffed with various supplies to help you along your way.  They come in 6 varieties: Auto, Dog, Emergency/Survival, First Aid, Heat Stress, and Kids. They come packed with things like rescue blankets, electrolyte tablets, first aid supplies and more.  Throw one in your pack for your adventures and you just might be glad you did.
  • Panasonic Toughbook U1
As far as tough mobile computers go, there is nothing tougher than a Panasonic Toughbook.  This UMPC doesn’t joke around, with an Intel Atom processor for low power consumption and high processing power, and a shock resistant SSD hard drive. Be sure to check out our full preview of this mean machine.  It will be available in August starting at $2800.
  • Leatherman Skeletool
There is a lot to be said about having a good survival tool by your side when you are out trekking about.  With that in mind, the Skeletool by Leatherman is one of the most versatile (and coolest looking) multitools around.  It’s lightweight and functional, sporting pliers, a knife, interchangeable screwdriver, carabiner, wire cutter and bottle opener.  There is also the Skeletool CS, which switches steel parts for carbon fiber.  The Skeletool is available now for $50, and the Skeletool CX is available for $64.

Amazon’s Kindle 2.0 Slated for October 2008?

The guys over at Crunchgear announced yesterday that a new version of the Amazon Kindle may ship as early as October 2008.

Garnering their info from an inside source, it is said that the new model will update the original, packing the same screen size into a smaller form factor along with a better interface.

A second, larger model will be seen in time for the holidays, shaped like 8 1/2 x 11-inch piece of paper.  Both models will come in a variety of colors (they can’t do much worse than the utilitarian gray featured on the first iteration of the Kindle, can they?) and they are aimed at attracting a younger audience.

Amazon hopes the Kindle will bring digital books and magazines into the mainstream, much like the iPod did for MP3′s years ago.

Expect to see many new and improved features when it’s finally released.

The Samsung i8510 Primera Has an 8 Megapixel Camera and 5.1 Surround Sound!

Just barely a month after Sony Ericsson spawned its 8-megapixel camera phone, Samsung has followed that step with the i8510 Primera. This 8-megapixel camera phone comes fully equipped with an LED flash (not as good as xenon) and autofocus. In terms of video, the Primera will be able to record slow-motion QVGA videos at 120FPS, similar to the LG KU990 Viewty and KF750 Secret.

There’s even a rumor that Samsung is also manufacturing the camera sensor for Sony Ericsson’s C905, although this has not been confirmed yet.

Intending to trump Apple’s iPhone 3G and the Nokia N96, the Primera is loaded with the most up to date features available. Starting from your choice of 8GB or 16GB of storage, a microSD card slot, a 2.8-inch QVGA screen and A-GPS. (more…)

The Keychain Flash Light That NEVER Needs Batteries

These tiny thumb size wind-up key chain flashlights are very useful, ecologically friendly, and just plain cute!  People these days are using LEDs to do almost everything from decorating Christmas trees to spelling out words in a kids game.  They’re powerful and extremely energy efficient.  So efficient in fact that it makes sense to use a dynamo to run a flashlight.  That’s exactly what Brando did.  The flashlight, which comes in three colors, measures 4 inches at it’s longest edge.

So whether this flashlight is with you camping when the call of nature sounds or on your keyring in case the porch light goes out, any way you want to use it, it’ll never need batteries. (more…)

The New Samsung Soul Comes in a Clamshell

To improve its standing in the style genre, Samsung introduced yet another Soul phone. The Samsung G400 Soul complements the design and form factor variations of the Soul, by adopting a clamshell design.

At a glance, it appears similar to the Motorola RAZR, but the G400 Soul is the first clamshell mobile phone with 5 megapixel camera from the Korean manufacturer. It may not be as thin as the RAZR, but it is way more advanced in terms of features and style.

There are two screens, common for modern clamshell phones, with the touch-sensitive external display that sports a multimedia interface and haptics feedback. (more…)

Introducing The New Hole Phone from Orange

This new phone was designed by Chi Shing Lo for Orange’s D&AD student awards. The phone has a hole in place of where the camera’s viewfinder would normally be. The hole is used to hang the phone on to it’s charger to charge, or to upload photos to a PC without having to plug anything into the phone.

This means a lot less clutter, and no cables to get in the way. (more…)
