Blind Google Engineer Creating a Touch Screen Phone for Blind People

T.V. Raman, a Google engineer and computer scientist who lost his eyesight at age fourteen, is working to develop a touch screen cell phone that can be used by the blind.

Raman has contributed to many blind-accessible computer applications, and the development of a new cell phone is only the next logical step. Touch screens are the latest tech trend to sweep the cell phone market, but with no buttons to guide the fingers on its glossy surface it can be particularly challenging for someone who cannot see the buttons to use it properly.

Rather than having the keypad appear on the screen in its standard configuration, Raman’s touch screen instead places the numbers in relative positions. The center of the keypad will be associated with a specific number, and then each of the other numbers will be dialed by sliding the finger in a specific direction relative to that center point. Up and to the left for 1, down and to the right for 9, etc. A mistake can be undone by shaking the phone, which will also make use of motion detection. (more…)

The iControlPad Enhances the iPhone Mobile Gaming Experience

Apple’s iPhone has proven to be quite a versatile piece of hardware, and earlier this month Apple said, “it’s not a phone, it’s a console experience.” While it makes use of the touch screen and tilt sensors for its gaming applications, without some other form of input (such as a D-pad and additional buttons) it really can’t compete with the other handheld consoles such as the Sony PSP or Nintendo DS.

We’ve been seeing some different prototypes of the iControlPad since summer, but now the iPhone gaming peripheral is heading into production. The unit itself is a case with additional buttons that the iPhone is inserted into, turning it into a handheld gaming console. (more…)

Introducing the Samsung 8 Megapixel Pixon Camera Phone

According to a recent FCC filing, Samsung is bringing its 8 megapixel Pixon M8800L touch screen camera phone to US markets. The 8800 model is already available overseas and gives us an idea about what the specs for the 8800L will be like. Early reports suggested that the Pixon would be exclusive to T-Mobile, but some new specs have shown that it will be using 850 and 1900 MHz WCDMA, which will make it compatible to the AT&T network.

Apart from its high resolution 8 megapixel camera with image stabilization, the Pixon can also record widescreen video at 720×480. (more…)

The Tivo Mobile App: TiVo, Now on Your iPhone

If you keep up with all the important tech news like I do, you probably share my sentiment that sometimes it seems like a lot of the cool contraptions I can think of have already been thought of.  That’s why it’s a good thing that innovation sometimes comes in the form of getting two established pieces of technological goodness to work with each other.

In that spirit, the DVR provider TiVo has recently launched the newest addition to its already robust suite of on-the-go functionality known as TiVo Anywhere: an open beta of the TiVo app for the Apple iPhone.  TiVo subscribers will be able to look at programming schedules and set their home boxes to record shows from anywhere they have data service on their iPhone’s.

The iPhone app is nearing completion, but it’s not TiVo’s first effort of its kind by any stretch of the imagination.  TiVo boasts an absolute slew of recently-released and shortly-upcoming integrations with other services like (more…)
