The Daewoo Lukid: Another Low Cost Laptop

Daewoo joins the ranks of low-cost laptop makers with it’s Intel clone named the Lukid. As with the others, it is aimed at school kids and runs Windows XP.  It’s form factor is reminiscent of Apple’s old clam-shell iMac complete with a handle.

The little laptop is based on Intel’s Classmate PC, in other words an Intel 900MHz Celeron processor. The Lukid also features a 9-inch 800X480 LCD display.  (more…)

This Robot Will Beat You At Air-Hockey

I know you have heard of plenty of chess playing ‘robots,’ which are still impressive, but this is completely different. This new robot from Nuvation can play air-hockey. As in a game that actually requires this robot to move, and it plays it really well.

It has won 90% of the games it has played and it is so good that if you shoot the puck right at it, the robot knows that it can simply stand still to block your goal.

Nuvation created the robot to showcase their capabilities and it is made using an industrial robot equipped with an optical sensor. The robot is programmed to track and react to a target object, which is in this case the hockey puck. (more…)

Vulnerabilty Found in Internet Enabled Coffee Makers

It was a great idea.  Build a coffee maker that lets you change the settings from anywhere with internet access and even have a cup ready right when you get home. But now, a couple years after the Jura F90 (retailing for about $2000 US) was brought online,  a huge hole has been found that gives almost anyone access to it, it’s internet capabilities and even the computers you’ve accessed it with.  That’s not just access to your coffee maker.  That’s access to your Windows operating system and anything it accesses. Like databases and financial records and security systems.

So far there is no patch. Says Craig Wright Manager of the Risk Advisory Services–and the man who discovered the hole, “I don’t know if many people would target this particular vulnerability because there probably are not a lot of coffee makers at the moment that are Internet-connected, and in my case it’s behind a firewall.”

With Eye-Phone, You Get Instant Info About What’s In Your Pictures

If you’ve ever gone to a foreign country, finding out where you are can sometimes be more complicated than it seems at first. Even GPS-Equipped globe trotters can be mislead as often times the map looks nothing like the terrain around them.

The European Space Agency (ESA) has set out to change that however. They’ve developed a system dubbed the “Eye-Phone” that utilises GPS Coordinates, Advanced Object Recognition and relevant information retrieved from the Internet to recognize and identify unknown objects.

That is a long way of saying “Take a photo with your mobile phone and it instantly tells you what you’re looking at”. (more…)

Three New HD Camcorders from JVC

We all know HD is here to stay, but if we can’t record our kids washing the dog and see every droplet that Rover shakes onto them, what good is it? Well JVC knows how important the details are so they made the Enviro GZ-HD10, GZ-HD30, and GZ-HD40 Camcorders to pick up the slack.

The HD40 can record up to 50 hours in Extended Play on its 120GB hard drive. Both the HD40 and the HD30 record at 1920×1080 resolution and, if you use iMovie HD 6 or Final Cut Pro 5 or 6 on a Mac, the cameras comes with plug-ins that allow the MPEG-2 files to be opened in those programs. You’ll have to re-encode it if you want to be able to edit without a similar recording device. (more…)

The Ultimate Media Center: The ITC One

Decisively marketed to the “I have more money than I know how to rightly spend” demographic, the ITC One from SE2 Labs is, quite possibly, the only media center you’ll need for at least the next 4 years (give or take). That is, of course, if you’re willing to fork over the minimum $25,000 to actually order the machine.

Sitting like some kind of gigantic monolith in your living room, the ITC One comes with an XBOX 360, iPod dock, and DVR on the standard model, with things like an optional Blu-Ray, Apple TV, or Nintendo Wii available as optional addons. Throw in your HDMI, Ethernet, and other standard connections, and this is one beast of a media machine that doesn’t kid around. It’s the veritable Swiss Army knife of media centers with everything wrapped up neatly in one self-contained package for your convenience. (more…)
