The Ear Bone Headset Connects to Your Ear?

While it is not exactly connected to the ear bone, the new Ear Bone Speaker-Mic headset sure looks like it is!  This brand new design has a 2-in-1 speaker/mic integrated into an earpiece. The earpiece not only serves as a headphone, but also transmits the vibration of your ear bone when you speak into an electric signal transmission.

The magic works like this: Your inner ear vibrates when you talk. This vibration is picked up by the Ear Bone headset and it is turned into an electronic signal which is transmitted to a radio receiver.  Cool, right?

Not only that but since the Ear Bone is hidden in your ear canal, it doesn’t pick up background noise.  That means it’s great for using on a motorcycle or in the car.  (more…)

This SimpleTech Eco-Friendly External Hard Drive is Made With Bamboo

I wonder what qualifies a product as an eco-friendly, however nowadays if it’s energy-efficient and resource-conscious, then it will be considered a friend to Mother Earth.

Made from 100% recyclable and sustainable materials, the SimpleTech [re]drive is claimed to make the world a little greener while storing and protecting your data. The design uses bamboo for styling, abundant in many areas on this planet, while the casing is made of aluminum which is one of the most recyclable metals of all. The clever design allows the aluminum to act as a heatsink, thus not requiring the use of a fan to cool things down. The combination is claimed to reduce the amount of carbon monoxide released by the PC. (more…)

The Panasonic LX3: A Camera for SLR Owners

Panasonic introduced its newest digital camera, the DMC-LX3, which is aimed at users who own an SLR. It’s pretty bold and unusual positioning. However after scrutinizing the press release, it seems Panasonic really knows what they’re doing. Panasonic is not pushing the megapixels with this one, instead they optimize and improve the CCD.

Here’s an excerpt from the release

The old formula equating pixel count with image quality does not always hold true. In general, if two CCDs have exactly the same physical size but different pixel counts, the one with more pixels is not necessarily better – in fact, it’s likely to generate more picture noise, especially in low-light parts of the image. This poor low-light image quality has been a source of great dissatisfaction for compact camera users. (more…)

The Oximeter Raises a Finger for Health

Finger Jewelry? You know those cute little clips they put on you in the hospital that tells the medical professionals more about you than you even want to know?  Well Oxihealth is making one for you and me.  It’s called the Oxihealth Finger Oximeter and it goes for $99.95 USD.

The white clip reads your pulse rate as well as your arterial hemoglobin’s oxyhemoglobin–that’s fancy talk for how much oxygen your blood is carrying to all your muscles, vital organs and the brain.

How does something that small do something that big?  I have no idea, but I know you can find out at Gadget Universe where they’re keeping these in stock.

15 Incredible Do-It-Yourself Gadgets You Wish You Made

For those of you who are DIY fans out there, we’ve got a special treat for you this week! Ordered from least to most difficult projects to undertake, this list of hot DIY gadgets is going to blow your mind! The most notable is the Vertipod DIY One-Man Hoverflyer and most resourceful is the Laser Listening device. The coolest and most retro one is the Plasma Arc Speakers that have been around since the 80s.

Check them all out below!

  1. DIY Laser Home Defence System
Ever wanted to secure your home the way the spooks at the CIA and other high-security agencies do? Well a do-it-yourself laser alarm system is actually pretty cheap and straight forward. All you need are some mirrors, a laser and a light detector (with adjustable gain).

  2. DIY Spy Laser Listening Device
Ever played the game Splinter Cell where you had to use a laser microphone to eavesdrop on the Chinese embassy? Well now you can build your own, albeit less portable and effective version. It is a simple contraption using a photodetector wired up to a microphone jack. You bounce a laser beam off a glass window and position the photodetector to receive the reflected ray. Plug the microphone jack into a laptop and record. Some DIYers have noted that the device is extremely difficult to angle and the gain on the photocell is fairly weak.

  3. The DIY Spy Night Vision Headset
This DIY active night vision headset uses a monocle from an old video recorder. All video monocles contain a CMOS that is sensitive to the infrared spectrum. Illuminating the area with infrared light thus allows you see through the video monocle whilst still being in pitch black darkness.

  4. Lego Rubik Cube Solving Robot
This innovative Lego Mindstorms Robot is able to first scan a rubik cube then solve it using a rotating base and arm to flip the cube. Click the link to watch the video.

  5. Lego iPhone Controlled Rover
If you have two iPhones and a Lego Mindstorms kit, you could construct a nifty iPhone Rover to explore the nether regions of your home. iPhone one is placed in the rover and has a special software that displays colors to tell the rover where to go. The second iPhone, that’s in your palm sends the color data at your command to the first wirelessly.

Meet the Airzooka Air Cannon

The Airzooka is a hand held fun gun that fires a ball of air up to 30 feet. Laugh with amusement as, seemingly from nowhere, you are able to mess up a person’s hair, ruffle their shirt, dress, or papers on a desk from a distance.

The device uses no batteries and requires no ammunition – it uses the air around it.

To operate the Airzooka: 1) Flip up the sight. 2) grip the handle with one hand and the elastic air-launcher with the other. 3) Aim. 4) Extend your arm fully while pulling the air launcher straight back. 5) Let go!

The Airzooka releases a ball of air like a catapult straight at your target. (more…)

A HoverVac! Just Like in The Jetsons

This special next-generation vacuum cleaner is bag-less, wheel-less and weight-less thanks to its hovercraft inspired air-skirt/cushion. It looks like something out of the Jetsons when it is being used.

The device uses the tremendous downdraft created by the suction motor to push air into an underskirt, causing the entire vacuum cleaner to hover weightlessly above your floor. (more…)

The 17 Hottest Steampunk Computer Creations

Even though it is often relegated to the realm of Geekdom, there is something enchanting about steampunk creations.  Best described as looking like something straight out of a Jules Verne novel, the trend rails against the clean lines and smooth surfaces present in so much of our modern lives and trades them up for an ornate style reminiscent of the Victorian era.  And wouldn’t you know it, there are some insanely creative artisan casemodders and computer enthusiasts out there who have a passion for all things steampunk.

Today, we’re compiling a list of the top steampunk computer creations for your viewing pleasure, and by the end, your computer might end up just looking a little dull in comparison.

  1. Steampunk Flat-Panel LCD Mod

Jake Von Slatt is arguably the premiere Steampunk casemodder online today.  His creations are both beautiful and functional, and he documents the entire process for many of his mods on his website, The Steampunk Workshop.
  2. The Steamputer

The Steamputer looks a bit like an artifact from a sunken submarine, with it’s green tint that reminds me of rusted copper.  The devil is in the details though, and as you get up close you notice the clever little bits put in here and there, like the piping all in the back of the monitor and the gears at the top of the keyboard.
  3. Victorian All-In-One PC
Another masterpiece from Jake Von Slatt, the Victorian All-In-One PC is quite possibly the most detailed piece in this showcase.  In true DIY spirit, the PC runs Kubuntu and puts your clunky gray Gateway to shame.
  4. The Opti-Transcripticon Flatbed Scanner

More creative naming from Datamancer, the Opti-Transcripticon is actually a full blown functional flatbed scanner lovingly transformed into an epic leather bound tome. It’s the perfect custom accessory to any steampunk computer station!
  5. The Telecalculograph
This impressive case is reminiscent of a furnace, what with it’s gaggle of gauges and piping  And yes, the furnace does actually light up.  What’s more impressive is that johnny5rd created this beast with  $70 and two months of time with little more than a dremel and drill.  Be sure to check out the full flickr gallery, linked above.

Coming Soon? The Macbook Touch

The internet is abuzz with new rumors concerning the possibility of a touchscreen laptop from Apple being made available in October.  Tentatively labeled the “Macbook Touch,”  A source at MacDailyNews has leaked all the details:

Think MacBook screen, possibly a bit smaller, in glass with iPhone-like, but fuller-featured multi-touch. Gesture library. Full Mac OS X. This is why they bought P.A. Semi. Possibly with Immersion’s haptic tech. Slot-loading SuperDrive. Accelerometer. GPS. Pretty expensive to produce initially, but sold at “low” price that will reduce margins. Apple wants to move these babies. And move they will. This is some sick shit. App Store-compatible, able to run Mac apps, too. By October at the latest.

Pieces of the puzzle continue to assemble as new details emerge.  (more…)
