For countless cultures throughout history, the sun was an integral part of their daily lives and they recognized its influence over all things. Perhaps we can take some time to reflect on that star that graces our solar system, and creatively tap into its potential using new and fun technologies.
Take a look at our list of 19 Cool and Unusual Solar Gadgets.
- Solar Powered Necktie

Admittedly a bit goofy looking, photovoltaic clothing could be the wave of the future. Imaging smaller, more fashionable cells integrated throughout your entire wardrobe. Every person would be a walking, miniature power-plant, harvesting the sun’s energy through everyday activities!
- Solar Lampion

Resembling something like an Oriental lantern, the solar lampion hangs during the day and shines at night. 36 small solar panels form the helix-like structure of the lamp. Neat!
- Odysseus – Solar Powered Flying Wing

This contraption from Aurora is the Odysseus, a solar powered flying wing that cruises around the stratosphere for up to 5 years on solar power alone. The vehicle is unmanned and designed to gather intelligence, surveillance and recon data. Essentially, this is for all intents and purposes a solar powered, low orbit satellite.
- Lifeport

With the increasing prevalence of electric vehicles and hybrids on the road, solar power is beginning to look like a viable alternative to fossil fuel for the average consumer. The Lifeport is a DIY kit that creates a clean closed energy system for your electric vehicles. Now it will certainly power your electric car, but it could also potentially power your home – with an output if 4.8 mwh per year, it generates a bit more power than the average household uses. You’d actually be putting energy back into the grid!
- Solar Bonsai Tree

Create and design your own, solar powered gadget dock. Braches are assembled and connect to form a tree resembling a Chinese bonsai. A planter cover pulls away to reveal where all your gadgets’ cables are stored. Zen-like, and environmentally friendly! [ Via ]

You know you have been watching a sci-fi movie or TV show that you like, and you catch yourself thinking about what you would do if you got a hold of a killer gadget like the Lightsaber from Star Wars or the Green Goblin’s Glider from Spider Man.
Today we take a look at some of the hottest gadgets from your favorite sci-fi shows and movies that you wish you could get your hands on. Enjoy.
- The Goblin Glider from Spider Man

In Spider Man, this Goblin Glider from Oscorp was created under a military contract. It was used by Harry Osborn, Aka the Green Goblin, along with the Goblin Suit he developed. It allowed him to fly effortlessly around at high speeds while his feet stayed securely attached to the glider. Spider Man 3 will feature a new version of the glider known as the Sky Stick.
- The Lighsaber

You know you can remember thinking to yourself about what you would do if you had your own Lightsaber, like the ones in Star Wars. I don’t know if something like this would ever be possible, but its ok to dream sometimes.
- The Neuralizer from Men In Black

The Neuralizer from Men In Black allowed MIB agents to wipe someones memory and replace them with new beliefs and ideas about what they think they heard, saw or experienced. If you could get your hands on one of these, as you can imagine, the possibilities are endless.
- The Hologram Messaging System from Star Wars

I know something like this has been shown in other movies besides Star Wars, but you would think that something like this would be in works in some research facility by now considering that is 2008. Forget video calls, I want 3d hologram messaging.
- The Minority Report Surface Gestural Computer

The computer used by Tom Cruise in Minority Report must have had like at least a Terabyte of RAM considering how fast he used it. It could be controlled using hand gestures. I know some of you may think of Microsoft’s surface computer when you see this, but that is not even close to what the one in Minority Report appeared to be capable of.

The above image shows what is supposedly the newest iteration of the Amazon Kindle (right) compared to the older version (left).
We’ve been hearing rumors of a new Kindle for some time now, and these are the first images that seem to represent a real, functional device. The new version has, for lack of a better term, a sleeker, more iPod-like look and feel. It’s also sturdier and heavier than it’s predecessor, featuring a brushed aluminum back.
One of the major changes is the inclusion of a mini-joystick and the removal of the scroll wheel. Also removed is the proprietary Kindle charging connection, with a regular mini-usb connection in its place. (more…)
LG’s reported slim slider phone with a whopping 8 Megapixel camera has arrived. Thursday LG unveiled the KC780, a dazzling phone and camera that is sure to turn heads.
The Camera on board is a Schneider-Kreuznach lens, which is said to enhance the clarity and sharpness of the images it captures. With it’s advanced face and smile detection features, it automatically focuses on the people’s faces in the images. If that doesn’t impress you, “the camera can also be configured to fire when a subject smiles, while a Beauty Mode removes subtle blemishes from a subject’s face.” (more…)

These days whenever Dubai is mentioned in conversation it usually has to do with something really really big. Well this time, you must see it to believe it. The guys over at Tameer development company in UAE have laid out plans to make the whole side of a 33-story building one huge LED display. Thus making it the worlds largest LED display to be embedded on an intended commercial tower.
They call it the ‘Podium’. At night it will illuminate the entire Dubai city skyline. It will be visible from almost as far as a mile away.
The design of the screen still allows light to pass through into the building. Thus the view from inside the building behind the screen will not be blocked by the display.

We all know Razer has given us good stuff in the past and today they are adding to that list of good stuff. Razer officially released their two new keyboards targeting the gaming world: The Arctosa and the Lycosa Mirror. These keyboards are built with budget users in mind.
Hitting the gaming world for about 50 bucks, the entry level Arctosa comes in either silver or black lettering with black keys. Its shape is similar to the Lycosa and is said to wipe out the “ghosting” effect that hinders movement when using the WASD key layout in many first-person shooter titles.” The Arctosa is said to hit stores this November.
