Sprint to Launch The gPhone On Sept 23: An iPhone Killer on the Horizon?

Alright, it won’t technically be called the gPhone, but for all it’s worth, this is the first iteration of Andriod  that will be available on a handset available to the general public.  The phone is the HTC Dream, and it comes loaded with Google’s Open Mobile OS, named Andriod.

Both the handset and the OS were given FCC approval last month.  Sprint is set to debut the phone and OS at it’s launch in nearly a week, on the 23rd of September.  Expect pricing and availability information to follow. Early speculation has the widespread release of the phone coming in between early October or right before Christmas.

Let’s hope this is the first in a long list of hardware to be released sporting Android.  The modularity and freedom provided by the open licensing, as well as the large corporate support, are positioning the software to be the dominant mobile platform.  If Google can improve on what Apple has done, in  terms of ease of use with things like the App store, we might have a real iPhone killer on our hands here.
