A Big Week for Apple: iPhone 3G, MobileMe, Remote App and More!

This looks like a big week for Apple.  With the iPhone 3G set to launch tomorrow, Steve Jobs and his team are busy at work in Cupertino, making sure all the pieces are in place for a successful release.  Here is the definitive roundup of all the things you can expect from Apple in the very near future.

iPhone 3G:

The newest iPhone brings with it not only 3G network connectivity but a host of improved features, many of which have been covered previously here on The Hottest Gadgets.  Expect greatness as Apple continues to raise the bar on mobile computing/music/telephony.  The iPhone 3G will be released tomorrow at 8 a.m.

iTunes:

There is a new version of iTunes out today, release 7.7, which brings with it two notable changes.  The overall look and feel of the program has not changed, but users will  notice the new Application Store.  Users also wishing to use the new MobileMe features will have to install the update.

MobileMe:

Described best as your own personal exchange server, MobileMe will sync contacts, calendars, e-mail, photos, and files automatically using your very own server, or “cloud.”  Plans start at $99 a year for 20 GB of storage.

Application Store:

This is the biggest of all Apple-related news right now, next to the iPod 3G. For iPod touch and iPhone owners who upgrade to version 2.0 software, they will be able to download and install a plethora of custom applications onto their beloved handsets. The store is now live as of this morning, and already has over 500 applications, 25% of which are completely free.

Other Notable Features:

Apple TV Update:

To make Apple TV compatible with MobileMe, Apple has released software update 2.1 and the Remote App from the App Store. The update is available using the built in software update feature.

Remote App:

One of the first free apps available at the App Store, the Remote App allows users to control iTunes or Apple TV with an iPhone or iPod Touch, wirelessly across their home network. Groovy!

That about covers it for The Hottest Gadgets’ Apple Roundup. Looks like Apple has created the perfect storm for themselves as they continue to innovate and improve on a great line of products. And to think, all of it started just 7 years ago on what would today be considered little more than a clunky white brick. The iPod has come quite a long way since then, and it makes one wonder what is possible in the next 7 years.
