The New Garmin GPS Handset Made by Asus

Garmin is launching a new touchscreen GPS smartphone later this year but they’re not going to make it themselves. Apparently it’s to be made by a leading electronics manufacturer from Taiwan, Asus.

This is one of the richest-featured touchscreen handsets to come out this year. No wonder Garmin is carefully considering who they want to make it. Asus is the maker of the Eee PC line and the magnificent ZX1 mobile phone which was made in collaboration with Lamborghini. With that kind of reputation, no wonder Garmin looked their way.

The Nuvifone, will be a hybrid between a smartphone and a navigation device. It’ll have Wi-Fi, GSM, and 3G connectivity. The touchscreen will measure 3.5 inches and the browser will be full HTML, not a subset. It will have the things we’ve come to expect: music and video players, a good camera, high-end GPS capabilities with maps, Google search, an easy to use navigation menu and more.

All these goodies won’t come cheap. Retail price should be about $500.
