The Adobe Open Screen Project Brings Rich Media to any Screen

Big news here: Adobe is bringing open formats and standards to FLV and SWF formats to deliver rich media on just about any screen you can think of. Whether it is sitting in your living room, by your computer, or on your cellphone. Adobe hopes to deliver a rich user experience across a number of platforms, they have teamed up with manufactures like Cisco, Intel, LG, and Nokia, and content providers like MTV networks, NBC, and the BBC.

From Adobe:

The Open Screen Project is working to enable a consistent runtime environment – taking advantage of Adobe® Flash® Player and, in the future, Adobe AIR™ — that will remove barriers for developers and designers as they publish content and applications across desktops and consumer devices, including phones, mobile internet devices (MIDs), and set top boxes.

Goals of the project include:

  • Removing restrictions on use of the SWF and FLV/F4V specifications
  • Publishing the device porting layer APIs for Adobe Flash Player
  • Publishing the Adobe Flash® Cast™ protocol and the AMF protocol for robust data services
  • Removing licensing fees – making next major releases of Adobe Flash Player and Adobe AIR for devices free
  • Over the air software updates for mobile devices

This is a really great step, as more major corporations realize the benefits of opening up their code. This also makes it cheaper and easier for content creators to distribute their content across many platforms simultaneously so that the consumer can see it whenever and wherever they want to. Open makes sense in a world where Windows is no longer dominant like it used to be.
