Samsung Unveils the World’s Fastest 256GB SSD

It was just a matter of time before this came along.

Samsung has announced today that it has developed a new 256 GB Solid-State Flash Drive. The drive delivers over 2 times the performance of traditional platter-based drives, with the ability to write 70 megabytes a second, and read 100 megabytes a second.

The drive attaches to an SATA interface, and is being designed for ultraportables, portable media devices and laptops. Samsung will begin production on the drives later this year.

Their are a few things that are significant about this drive, namely the increase in capacity, performance and the ability to deliver a more stable form of storage for mobile devices. These drives consume very little power at a price that’s more competitive with traditional storage.

The real problems facing SSD’s up to this point were that they didn’t hold enough data for the average user, and that they were much too expensive for the little storage they were getting. These problems are now being worked out, and SSD’s are set to proliferate on mobile platforms.

Expect more manufacturers to follow in Samsung’s footsteps in the near future.
