Intel Gearing Up to Launch Atom

Intel Atom

Intel is preparing to launch its latest processor, the Atom. The key attraction of the Atom is it’s price.

Rumors circulating on the internet put the cheapest Atom CPU between $29 and $49.

The hope is that Intel’s latest chip will allow PC makers to produce Ultra Mobile PCs (UMPCs) and Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) at sub $200 prices.

Intel’s Atom Processor will also feature an incredibly low idle power draw of about 30mW, extending the battery life of UMPCs and MIDs. Current calculations indicate that the new processor is so small that Intel could fit 2500 “Atoms” on one 300 mm silicon wafer, reducing production costs whilst raising profit margins even further.
