A Terabyte of Data in Your Hands: the LinkStation Mini

Back in 1980 IBM unveiled the world’s first gigabyte-sized hard drive, the IBM 3380. It weighed 550 pounds and cost $40,000.

The LinkStation Mini

We’ve come a long way.

The brand new LinkStation Mini from Buffalo Technology holds a terabyte of data and only costs $699. It’s also considerably smaller, fitting into the palm of your hand and weighing in at a lightweight 1.1 pounds.

The Mini is targeted towards companies looking to save physical space in their work areas. It connects through an Ethernet port to provide extra storage for an entire workforce. “The new LinkStation Mini is the ideal storage networking solution for these customers because it’s compact and easy-to-use, yet robust, feature-rich and extremely cost effective.”

The Mini is designed without a fan, so not only is it ultra-quiet, it saves on the electricity bill. In it’s full operational mode it uses only 10W.

The RAID 1 supported dual-drive system provides complete data redundancy, meaning increased protection for your data in the event of a disk failure. It also supports UPS to allow users to safely shut the drive down and save data in the event of a power failure.

From the IBM 3380 to the LinkStation Mini. A thousand times the space and 500 times smaller. We have come a long way.
